An independent cultural guide to the history and craft of the book. We do not sell books or publish editions, and we are not connected with the former website on this domain or its catalogue.

Archive

The archive is the guide's table of contents. It lists every section with a short description and explains what now opens at the old addresses left over from the former website on this domain.

A good table of contents saves the reader time. The guide's archive is just such a table of contents, only for an entire website.

How the old addresses work

This domain used to host a book catalogue with pages for editions and people, whose addresses contained a record number. Those pages have not survived, and we do not restore their content. Such addresses now open two notes related to the subject of the site: one on a book's imprint details and one on the professions without which a book cannot appear.

The number in an old address no longer means anything: whatever it is, you will land on the same note. Other old addresses unrelated to books have been removed and will not be restored.

  • Home

A guide to how a book is made: the history of printing, the structure of a volume, paper, type, illustration and the people who work on an edition.

  • Articles

The main topics of the guide and a catalogue of standalone articles for English-language readers.

  • History

A short chronicle: paper in the 2nd century, Gutenberg's type and his Bible around 1455, the Moscow Apostol of 1564, the ISBN since 1970.

  • Imprint pages (in Russian)

A note at an old catalogue address: what a book's imprint details are, where to find them and what the ISBN means.

  • Who makes a book (in Russian)

A note at an old catalogue address: the roles of author, editor, proofreader, illustrator, typesetter and print technologist.
